Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

About the procedure

Loose abdominal skin is a very common problem after weight loss and  pregnancy. Sagging skin in the stomach area could be also a result of aging and sometimes even hereditary.

Abdominoplasty or „tummy tuck“ removes this excess and sagging skin, tightens the abdominal muscles and restores a tight and flat stomach. Usually the goal of the procedure is to remove the loose skin, but it is often combined with liposuction to remove the subcutaneous fat and to improve the contour in the abdominal area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is suitable for this surgery?
  • People in good physical and mental condition and health;
  • People without diseases that can reduce the effect of the procedure;
  • People with stable weight that are worried about the look of their belly;
  • People with realistic expectations of what can be achieved through the surgery.

Classic abdominoplasty

This type of surgical intervention requires an incision in the lower abdomen. The skin is lifted, the abdominal muscles are tightened and fat is removed. The skin is then pulled down and the excess part is trimmed. The navel is repositioned. Finally, drainage tubes are placed, which are located in small holes below the incision site. The incisions are sutured with an aesthetic seam.

Mini tummy tuck

This operation removes the loose skin and subcutaneous fat from the abdominal area below the navel. The abdominal muscles are tightened to give a flat profile to the abdomen. The incision is significantly shorter and is in the area of pubic hair. This type of surgery is often required in women with overhanging skin after caesarean section, visible through their clothing.

Extended abdominoplasty

Extended abdominoplasty involves an incision along the bikini line which extends to the patient‘s sides and in the area of the hips. The skin is lifted, the abdominal muscles are tightened and the subcutaneous fat is removed. The skin is then pulled down and the excess part is trimmed. The navel is repositioned. Finally, drainage tubes are placed, which are located in small holes below the incision site. The incisions are sutured with an aesthetic seam. Extended abdominoplasty is performed in patients after massive weight loss and / or accumulation of excess subcutaneous adipose tissue in the hip area as well.

Reverse abdominoplasty

This type of abdominoplasty allows for simultaneous correction of excess skin and subcutaneous fat in both the abdomen and chest area. The procedure is suitable for men with severe gynecomastia, women and men after significant weight loss, and women with grade III breast ptosis. The incision is made in the area just below the breasts, in the inframammary folds.  After that the excess skin is lifted and removed from the abdominal area and, at the same time, an intervention is performed in order to contour the chest area.

Endoscopic abdominoplasty

This surgical intervention aims to tighten the abdominal muscles through an incision which  is about 1 cm long and is positioned in the hairy area of the pubis. The procedure  is suitable for patients with lax abdominal wall, but preserved skin elasticity and minimum excessive subcutaneous tissue in the abdominal area.

Fleur de Lys abdominoplasty

This type of abdominoplasty is very similar to the classic one. The only difference is that an additional vertical skin incision is made along the midline in the abdominal area. The intervention is performed  in patients after massive weight loss and allows the removal of excess soft tissue in both vertical and horizontal directions.

Belt Lypectomy

Belt lypectomy allows simultaneous removal of excess skin and subcutaneous tissue in the abdominal area and buttock soft tissue lifting. A cut is made around the patient‘s lower back and belly to take out the extra skin and fat. The intervention is suitable for patients after massive weight loss.

The recovery time is different for each person. After the surgery you will have to wear compression elastic underwear for about 4 weeks. The dressings are changed every few days. It is very important to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions for wound care. You can do some very light activity such as walking, but you must not exercise in the gym or lift weights for at least 3 months.

After such a procedure, it is necessary to wait an year before getting pregnant. If you do not gain too much weight during pregnancy, your tummy will still look great after the baby is born – just like after surgery.

The belly button is repositioned on the skin during the tummy tuck, but its shape remains the same.

The tummy tuck incision is hidden at the lower part of the abdomen which is normally covered by a bikini and underwear. Moreover, it turns into a thin white line over time. The patient’s ability to form rougher-looking scars, which is often associated with a genetic predisposition, must be assessed preoperatively.
