Frequently Asked Questions

Former pregnancy

During pregnancy, abdominal muscles stretch and lower abdomen protrudes to a certain extent. The curvature of the muscles in the abdominal wall defines the silhouette plane or shape of the abdomen after liposuction. Most women who have been pregnant and undergo this procedure are very pleased with the achieved results.

After a successful liposuction, undergoing abdominoplasty(tummy tuck) is usually not necessary.

The incision used for a cesarean section or hysterectomy is called a Pfannenstiel incision. It is made in the lower abdomen area. A frequently occurring and also undesirable consequence of a Pfannenstiel incision is a permanent swelling of the subcutaneous fat accumulation just above the incision. This unpleasant deformation is very easily corrected through liposuction.

Massive weight changes, both in obesity and subsequent weight loss, lead to fat formation with more fibrous structure and thus, it complicates the liposuction.

An important factor for the successful liposuction is the location of abdominal fat deposits. Abdominal fat tissue resides at two different levels: surface and visceral.

  • Surface abdominal fat accumulation is located just below the skin above the abdominal muscles;
  • Visceral fat accumulation is found inside the abdominal cavity near the intestines.

Some people have more visceral than surface fat tissue. Surface fat can be removed through liposuction. However, visceral fat deposit cannot be removed through liposuction because it is extremely dangerous. It can only be eliminated through a weight loss diet and exercise. Most patients have more surface than visceral fat cells. Each one of such patients can obtain cosmetic improvements through abdominal liposuction.

Patient’s age is not an important factor for the success and the results of the procedure. Liposuction can improve the aesthetic appearance in case of abdominal obesity, while very little risks are being taken and very little discomfort is being felt.

After liposuction, the skin in the upper abdominal area may appear slightly wrinkled. Elderly patients, who have reduced skin elasticity, tend to experience overextension and wrinkles. Interestingly, in the lower abdominal area, the skin is not inclined to similar overstretching. The elasticity of the Scarpa fascia can prevent overextension after liposuction of the lower abdomen.

Usually after this operation, the pain is minimal and it is easily tolerated. It is similar to the pain when having muscle soreness and burning, which are experienced after a very intense workout. Patients can feel it most intensely when touching the skin of the operated area during activities such as turning in bed, getting in or out of a car or sitting in a chair. Also the most intensely, it is felt in the first 3 to 5 days and, if necessary, can be easily treated through common painkillers.

Cosmetic improvement is obvious (and usually dramatic) on the day after the surgery, as a result of drainage and wearing compression garments. In the next few days a swelling appears. It will slowly decrease in the next 4 to 12 weeks. The slower appearance recovery of the abdominal skin is normal. It usually takes 3-4 months for full recovery.
